The Broke-Ass Challenge

August 11th, 2010

I swear, this is going to turn into the PokerMeister Apprentice blog, because I find myself taking inspiration from the Meister more and more.

Meister pointed out that I should stop playing the MTT lotto in favor of cash games, but I countered with the argument that my fragile ego couldn’t stand to play micro stakes NLHE online and my bankroll can’t withstand the variance of the higher-stakes games. That’s where YOU hopefully come in.

How can I play micro stakes and still make it worth my time? Prop bets, of course. So, who is in for a new challenge, the Broke-Ass Cash Game Challenge!

Here is what I propose: Me and whoever else is interested can play $10-max NLHE on a site of our respective choice. We are to track our wins and losses.  Whoever can win more at that level within a certain specified period of time wins the prop bet, and with it, some actual money!

Now, I’m light on details because this plan really doesn’t work unless I have another broke-ass bitch to enter the challenge. We can work out the prop bet prize, time frame and any other rules once I know there is someone or someones interested. I don’t care if it is just you and me in the challenge or a group of people. That said, I must insist on one thing: I have to somewhat “know you” as trustworthy. That means any fellow poker blogger is invited, as are anyone I know in real life. Even some non-blogger commentors are welcome, if we have conversed online in the past. But I cannot promise to accept all comers. It will have to be a person-by-person decision.

It’s not that I don’t trust you. It’s that I don’t trust humanity at large, and this has to be based on trust, since there is no foolproof way to track each other’s wins/losses. You can be assured that I won’t lie or cheat because, basically, I make it a point to pay all of my bets and to be fair in my gambling. It’s part of the gambler’s code. Word is bond, bro!

So, who is willing to enter the kiddie pool with me for a knockdown, dragout fight? Leave me a comment or email me directly. My email can be found on the left sidebar, at the top.

Until next time, make mine poker!

Ok, I will play. Although I have to say, I’d prefer $5 max. Why don’t we do number of hands instead of a time duration? I will be able to be truthful due to a Poker Tracker graph.

I was going to ape what Jeff said. I tried to do this exact challenge (live poker only) with Darko, W, PP and a few others. We called it ‘King of the Hill’ and it was basically an unfair challenge because of the unlimited amount of time that some people (W *cough*) had to play and the very limited amount of time the rest of us had. Meaning that even if we were the same skill level, I was guaranteed to lose.

The fairest way to do this is to arduously track either the number of hours played or the number of hands played and just say whomever has the best P+L after a certain cutoff is the winner. I don’t have software to track the number of hands played, but if it was relatively cheap, I would buy it to enter this challenge.

Respect the kiddie pool. If you go in there like a bull, they’re not going to respect you and you’re going to lose your moneys. Don’t pee in it cause the kids will revolt against you. They’re potentially smarter than your average 1/2 donk.

@Jamie – Both HEM & PT3 offer trial versions. I can assure you that if you put the time into it, it will be profitable for you to use. I have no doubt that you will improve your game.

@Jeff – I think you may have a good idea wrt number of hands, but the idea here is to get Jordan multi-tabling cash games. Therefore, you guys would be attempting to build up your skills as multi-tablers as well. I would suggest hours played instead of time; say 20-30 hours over the period of a month or two?

  5. Jeff

    PM -

Then Jordan should do that without a challenge. All three of us have jobs that take up variable amounts of our time, and even though that adds up to one hour per night, I don’t even do my SNG grind every night as it is, maybe 15-17 tops(where my 4 month ROI is 19%, TYVM). the only sensible way to do a challenge when dealing with people who have various time contraints, # of hands is really the only way to go.

  6. Jeff

Also, there isnt a lot of palpable skill level change from 5 max to 10 max, and I’m not too keen on multi-tabling 10 max for a challenge. We could do overall ROI/# of hands and play either stake. I’m far more comfortable with spreading $30 instead of $60.

  7. The Poker Meister

You guys need to work that out. But I would suggest making the # of hands be something like 4 tables * 70 hands / hr * XXX hours. Also, I’m going to put myself out there and say that if you need the BR, I’d be willing to trade FT $$$ for P* or paypal. I’ve been reading each of you long enough that I feel comfortable doing that.

  8. Jeff

Thanks man, and I find your blog to be rich with lots of fun stuff to read as well, but bankroll isn’t my problem on FT….if I were only playing cash, I’d be rolled 100BB for 10NL, but that’s SNG money that I’m using. I am simply not the best online cash player – as I fare much better live when I can use other skills to my advantage. So, spreading 40 might be fine short term…just not something I’d want to do over a month’s time or something.
