It’s been 2010 for several days now and I have yet to play any poker. Dizzamn!
After X-mas in AC, its been really quiet, poker-wise, in the High Household. Wifey Kim and I spent New Years Eve at a pretty awesome bowling alley in NYC. We both suck at bowling, but the idea was novel and we didn’t want to have a usual over-hyped New Years Eve. The bowling alley actually did a great job, with tons of food and free drinks. In fact, they did such a good job that I had to practically carry wifey Kim home at about 1am. She was like a human-sized ragdoll, which was more than amusing at the bowling alley, a bit difficult when climbing the stairs at the subway, and once again fun when we returned home. Nothing like a drunk wifey Kim to light up an evening.
The next day, we joined our friends Jefe and Robyn to Jefe‘s upstate cabin. The highlight of the trip was when the rented 4-wheel drive Kia (what a piece of shit!) couldn’t make it up the driveway due to packed snow and ice. It took Jefe and I 2 hours of hard labor just to escape. We took the gals out to dinner and then chose to park a good 20 minute walk from the cabin to avoid getting stuck again. 20 minutes in the cold snow isn’t that much fun, especially the next morning, when I had to carry all of wifey Kim and my stuff to the car. But we made it into an adventure, and overall, it was a great time.
We returned to NYC where we had dinner with wifey Kim’s friends who were in town from Syracuse. They wanted to go to Capital Grill, a fairly expensive steakhouse with a bunch of locations nation-wide. Having never eaten there before, I was game. Dinner was fantastic (I had the veal chop with Roquefort butter, and wifey Kim had their famous dry-aged sirloin) and the highlight was the parade of NFL personnel who walked through the dining room on their way to the door. I guess there was some sorta group dinner. All I could readily identify was coaches Bill Cowher and Tony Dungy, Dan Marino and ESPN commentator Dan Patrick.
Since then, I’ve thought about playing online or live poker, but there is always something in the way. The biggest distraction when I am at home is the new Super Mario Brothers game for the Wii. Its classic, old-school Mario action with the added excitement of 2- to 4-player cooperative mode. Wifey Kim loves the game, so it is nice having a game I can play with the Mrs.
The plan tonight is to return to the Tuna Club for their Tuesday tournament. After that, though, I really need to get my game in gear. If I want to continue to build on the success of 2009, I need to play more often and eventually, higher. I’m not there yet, but until I put in the hours, I never will be.
I’ll do my best to save some hands from tonight. Hopefully, that will help me focus on my game and play better. My last few sessions have been pretty bad, partially due to being card-dead and partially to not paying enough attention. But that all changes tonight.
Until next time, make mine poker!
